EURO-JOURNAL DAY 9 (LAGO MAGGIORE)

Awoke at 7:30 to swim with Rolf and Mariann. The lake was a little cooler than yesterday evening, but fine for a twenty-minute swim. And I discovered they have a shower coming out of a tree by the garden to rinse off after swimming. It's really just a hose and shower attached to the trunk of a bushy tree, but look's really funny because from the side it just looks like a normal tree, but spraying water.
A pre-breakfast swim is a wonderful way to start the day. What a life! Then breakfast of cheese, bread, meats, yoghurt, and other wonderful European things on the balcony while the sun rose slowly from behind the mountains bringing out the lovely colours of the houses around us. Rolf and Mariann went out for a neighbourhood tennis competition and Carol took a rest and did some reading and writing.
In the afternoon, Carol wanted to take me on a short hike up to a church overlooking the lake. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful hike. At the church, there was a sign stating only 40 minutes more to the Italian border. The idea of "walking to Italy" really grabbed me so I proposed to Carol to continue hiking. She was up for that so we continued along the tiny path, passing quaint houses and colourful, lily-filled gardens. I was disappointed when we reached Italy because there was an actual border there and neither of us had ID. It would've been nice to boast I had walked from one country into another, even if it was just an hour or so.
We had some ice cream on the way back and then a refreshing swim in the lake. And this evening played bowls with the family and nieghbours. For dinner, we ate in the garden, red snapper and local maize dish called bolenta and nice wine. Life is good.

View at breakfast. Not too shabby.

View from the church.

Italy behind me.

Hi camera!

Orange lilies were everywhere.

The little path to Italy. (There's also a road down by the lake in case you're wondering)

Lake and mountains.

Dinner with the Walther Family.
