Talking to one of my elementary school kids this week he told his uncle had been cut. "Kitta", he said making a wide arc across his chest using his finger as the blade. It seemed like a strange thing to say, but kids do that. And with my poor Japanese I rarely unstand the context anyway. But there's nothing wrong with is uncle, he was there also. Maybe it was a long time ago.But it made me think. Any of my students could be great grandchildren of Samurai. It was less than 140 years ago that the Samurai period ended and that's not a lot of generations. I had better think twice before crossing my students.
